The fossil displayed here is that of a Equus scotti, a ancient species of horse that went extinct geologically very recently. It was the last species of the Equus genus to exist on Earth before Equus ferus, the modern horse, showed up and took its place in North America.

This fossil is displayed as the last along a line of numerous specimens, with each specimen representing a different evolutionary branch of the Equus genus. `
